The journey of Dr. Foram Vaghela

Dr. Foram Vaghela (Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry) is a first line of entrepreneur in Agri-tech start-up ecosystem. She has commendable educational accolades and research in the field of analytical chemistry. Her work has been published in various newspapers, magazines and got awarded for her work by state ministers, praised in newspapers for her work and recently got a grant of Rs.10 lacs from Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri. Bhupendra Patel.

Dr. Foram while pursuing her Masters in Science (MSc.) in Kachchh University, she heard from a farmer and observed a problem being faced by farmers for the cultivation of Papaya. As in Papaya cultivation, almost 70% plants are males (non-reproductive) and only 30% of plants are female (reproductive which can bear Papaya fruits). Therefore, if it is known in the beginning that a plant is a male or a female, it will be very helpful for the farmers and save resources, efforts and their money. This problem was picked by Dr. Foram and she work enthusiastically towards finding a solution and she succeeded.

Please note that as of now, the sex identification in papaya plants is done by DNA method but it is costly, time consuming and out of the reach of small farmers.

Dr. Foram has succeeded in developing a natural, cost effective, and easy to use chemical method to identify the sex of papaya plants by studying the characteristics of plants and color of its leaves. It is incredible to note that, she has expanded the scope of this method for the identification of sex of plants in Date Palm and Parval as well.

She has already published 02 patents and written many books and articles about it.

So instead of limiting her ideas to only research work and publications, she chose to solve the problem and with the help from parents, her guide during Ph.D. work and a friend, she delve into a venture of starting her owns research lab to put the ideas to practice.
